1. L35/L36 (1960-1966)
The initial HiJet model is known as the 1960 HiJet truck. Later, in 1961, HiJet came with another model, the enclosed cargo van version. These versions (trucks and vans) were provided with a 365 cc two-stroke engine, as the Kei regulations were then. Since it’s tiny, the HiJet 1960 had a limited weight capacity.
However, HiJet 1960 was reliable and durable, making the Daihatsu begin expanding its market. Additionally, the Daihatsu tried to introduce a new truck called L50P/L50V at the beginning of 1963. This new truck had a nickname called New-Line and a space capacity of 500 kg, even longer than the HiJet.

2. S35/S36 (1964-1968)
Over time, precisely in 1964, the Daihatsu HiJet 1000 saw a potential to change its image. Daihatsu tried to switch the model from a standard cab to a cab-over micro van. It means that HiJet would have two sliding passenger doors, two swinging front doors, and a large tailgate.
By changing its model, HiJet could carry more heavy properties but still not violate the Kei regulations of the era. As for the other settings, HiJet used a 356 cc engine with a three-speed manual gearbox, like the first-generation version.
However, the second generation of HiJet still used water-cooled engines, even though the early air-cooled versions were available.
Later, the New-Line 1960 was slowly replaced by the New-Line Cab since it offered the potential owners the alternative of an 800 cc or a 1000 cc petrol engine. Therefore, even though the New-Line Cab can no longer obey the Kei regulations, the more powerful engine and the added cargo space options made excellent sales.
3. Daihatsu HiJet 1000 S37 (1968-1972)
You may see the mild body refresh when looking at the S37 generation because Daihatsu made this version’s design to have a more box-like setting. The doors were hinged differently, whereas, in the prior years, the door hinges were always on the rear of the door. However, S37’s door hinges were placed in the front.
HiJet S37 still obeys the Kei regulations; however, the gearbox was improved to a four-speed manual, making better fuel efficiency.
4. S38/S40 (1972-1982)
At the end of 1971, Daihatsu produced a new HiJet to become the 1972 model year, S38/S40. These models were unique, offering new sheet metal and leaf-spring rear suspension. S38 was a van version with sliding side doors and a top-hinged tailgate.
At first, Daihatsu made this version a 356 cc one. However, the Japanese government suddenly changed the Kei regulations in October 1976, saying Kei vehicles could have a 550 cc engine. As if excited to hear the news, Daihatsu made the HiJet 550 with a 547 cc AB20 OHC two-stroke water-cooled engine.
The law also allows HiJet to be 50 mm longer than 1960’s HiJet. It brings more comfort to drivers and passengers and has received significant recognition since it was exhibited at the 1976 Osaka International Trade Fair.
5. Daihatsu HiJet 1000 S60 (1977-1981)
Perhaps you won’t notice the difference between 5th-generation HiJet (HiJet 55 Wide) and 4th-generation HiJet since they look similar. However, Daihatsu made the 5th-generation HiJet with a more significant engine capacity and a more extended, comprehensive, and taller design.
A month after the release of HiJet 55 Wide, Daihatsu made a completely redesigned van model. The van model was fitted with Daihatsu’s new AB 550 cc engine, which had been made to meet the stringent exhaust gas regulations to reduce pollution.
6. 6th – 10th Generation
